Entitled, "Diversity, Economic Change, and Employment: The Transatlantic Laboratory," the symposium brought together some 75 Fulbright alumni, current fellows, students, staff, and professors from the United States and Germany.

Fulbright Lecture Series Opens to Broad Enthusiasm

The FLS 2008 opened with a very well attended lecture by Professor Murry Nelson from Penn State University. Some fifty students and colleagues gathered in the main lecture hall of the Albertina University Library to hear Nelson discuss the dynamics of American immigration since the later nineteenth century. Asian immigration to America provided the focus of the talk.

ASL Launches 2008 Leipzig-Fulbright Lecture Series

American Studies Leipzig is proud to welcome six distinguished Fulbright Scholars from Germany and from around Europe to the University of Leipzig for the annual Leipzig-Fulbright Lecture Series. The theme for this year’s FLS is “ Reform and Reaction in the American Revolutionary ”. The theme deals with the conflict between American Revolutionary ideals, the efforts actually to achieve such ideals, and the reactions that such efforts have unleashed. It is a theme at the heart of the American story, and its global context.

Picador-Fulbright Roundtable Big Hit

The Picador-Fulbright Roundtable on American film, literature, and society was attended by some forty students and members of the University of Leipzig community. The overwhelming response by participants was “When can we do that again?!”.

Picador Professor John Haskell and Fulbright-Leipzig Chair Ben Alpers joined students and colleagues to kick off the roundtable in the Villa Tillmanns over some pizza and beer (and sparkling water) to talk about film, literature, and American society.

In both a very personal and professional way, Professor Johanningsmeier relates in his article, “How My Fulbright Experience Changed Me”, how his year in Leipzig and at American Studies has changed his life and that of his family.
