The Veranstaltungsforum der Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck and American Studies Leipzig jointly hosted the third Picador Professorship Reading in the Galerie Pierogi on Thursday, November 22. In the gallery packed with over 90 guests, Picador Professor and novelist John Haskell read from his acclaimed novel American Purgatorio. The reading was complemented by actor Günter Schossböck reading excerpts from the German translation Amerikanisches Fegefeuer.

On 22 November, 2007, 8pm, John Haskell will read from his novel “American Purgatorio” at the Galerie Pierogi, Spinnereistraße 7, Halle 10, 04179 Leipzig. He will be accompanied by the German actor Günter Schossböck (Schauspiel Leipzig) who will read from the German translation “Amerikanisches Fegefeuer.” The reading will be accompanied by live DJ music (DJ Haircut, Ilses Erika).

With a Call for Papers, American Studies Leipzig has announced a new journal for graduate students of American Studies in Europe. The new journal, aptly called as|peers, will offer emerging scholars a voice: A platform to showcase their work beyond the graduate classroom and a forum for discussion and exchange. as|peers is currently the only peer-reviewed publication channel for graduate students in European American Studies programs.
The German-American Fulbright Commission’s newsmagazine The Funnel has a long and interesting essay in its most recent edition (October 2007) by Professor Charles Johanningsmeier, who just stepped down as Fulbright-Leipzig Chair for American Studies. In both a very personal and professional way, Professor Johanningsmeier relates in his article, “How My Fulbright Experience Changed Me”, how his year in Leipzig and at American Studies has changed his life and that of his family.
Due to an unexpected demand, American Studies Leipzig has decided to offer another Proseminar for Magister Grundstudium. The Seminar will take place in a condensed format, i.e. extended sessions over a shorter time. Please note that this may well be one of the last topical proseminars offered in the American Studies Leipzig Magister Grundstudium.
