If you are interested in cultural exchange and meeting American students, please consider volunteering for the MentorInnenprogramm of the Freiwilligenagentur Leipzig. The program is designed to welcome and support a group of students from Abilene Christian University (Texas) that will live, study, and volunteer in Leipzig from January until May, 2018.

From September 3rd - 19th, 2016, the International Summer School “Cultures of Security in a Transatlantic and Global Context” will be held at American Studies Leipzig for the third time.

Structured by a multidisciplinary approach, this summer school brings together specialists and students from the fields of political science, history, sociology, economics, and cultural studies for an intensive two-week program of lectures, seminars and case study workshops to explore and discuss the central components that shape contemporary debates and notions of security.

Deutschlandfunk's morning reporter Christiane Kaess spoke with American Studies' Crister S. Garrett about the meaning of the Iowa caucuses for the remaining primaries, and as a barometer of the political mood in th United States currently. Professor Garrett observed that we have not witnessed such voter frustration and even anger in the last quarter century.

From 17 September to 1 October 2016, the Fulbright commission will organize the American Studies Institute, an interdisciplinary research opportunity for German scholars, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers in the humanities with a clear connection to the US.

This year’s American Studies Institute will address “Why Black Lives Matter: Race and Politics in the U.S.” and will be organized in collaboration with the San Francisco State University. The Fulbright commission will provide 10 to 15 scholarships.

American Studies Leipzig is very happy to welcome Humboldt Fellow Dong Li as a visiting author for 2016. The poet and translator holds an M.F.A. in Literary Arts from Brown University and is currently a German Chancellor Fellow with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and a Literature Fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart).
