On November 16, the ASAA (American Studies Alumni Association) had invited to a literary event with American writer Dave King, who read from his novel The Ha-Ha. A story about the experience of war, about disability, silence, and endurance, The Ha-Ha was published in 2005 to much critical acclaim and soon became a national bestseller. The excerpts that were read by King brought to live a markedly American voice, rich with nuances and complex characters.

American Studies Leipzig joined the Friederich Ebert Foundation and the Magdeburg German-American Dialog Center on November 9th in Magdeburg to assess the dynamics and consequences of the American Congressional Elections 2006. Some 200 audience members raised a series of questions, especially about the implications of the elections for the Presidential Elections in 2008.

The American Studies Alumni Association (ASAA) is proud to announce the following event:

King’s debut is an exciting yet graceful novel about the experience of war, about communication, silence, and family.

Dave King lives in Brooklyn and currently is fellow at the American Academy in Rome.

American Studies Leipzig in cooperation with the United States Consulate in Leipzig held an 2006 Congressional Elections Event on Wednesday, November 8th. Some 150 people from the Campus and the City of Leipzig came together to discuss what shaped the elections, and what the elections mean for the United States, both at home and abroad.

“Inspiring People: Culture and Education in German Foreign Policy”

American Studies Leipzig has held its second annual Student Orientation Week (SOW). The goals of SOW 2006 were to introduce students to the new BA Program in American Studies, to allow students to get to know each other, and to acquaint the incoming BA Class of 2006 to the broader American Studies Community in Leipzig. Events were held over a period of three days.
