The Veranstaltungsforum der Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck and American Studies Leipzig jointly hosted the second Picador Professorship Reading in the Galerie Pierogi on Thursday, July 12. In the gallery packed with over 70 guests, Picador Professor and novelist James Hopkin read from his novel Winter under Water. He was joined by his guest, anglo-indian writer Priya Basil, who read from her novel Ishq and Mushq.

American Studies Leipzig is proud to welcome Prof. Madeleine Vala (University of Puerto Rico) as its first Frank Freidel Resident. Initiated to mark the Frank Freidel Library’s 10th anniversary, the residency-program allows scholars to pursue research projects at American Studies Leipzig and its library. The Frank Freidel Library has extensive holdings in the fields of United States history, literature, and culture as well as access to the fields’ most important data bases.

Poland’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Janusz Reiter, will speak to American Studies Leipzig and the City of Leipzig on Thursday, 21 June 2007, at the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig. The subject of his talk will be “From the Atlantic Community to a Transatlantic Space?”. Mr. Reiter has also served as Ambassador to Germany during the 1990s. The Director of the Polish Institute Leipzig, Mr. Michal Maliszewski, will introduce the Ambassador.
The talk will be followed by a reception.

The Consulate General and the Haus des Buches cooperate in an event that brings young American poets together for a reading on Tuesday, June 19, 8pm at the “Literaturcafe des Haus des Buches.”
The poets will read, together with their translators, from a new anthology called “Junge Amerikanische Lyrik.” Among the participants are: Matthea Harvey, Christian Hawkey, Jeffrey McDaniel, Kevin Young, Steffen Popp, Ron Winkler, Jan Wagner, and Uljana Wolf.
