Winter Semester COVID-19 Updates

[ Most recently updated on 2020-10-22 ]

We will use this news item to keep you updated on the impact of SARS-CoV-2/COVID on instruction and other curricular aspects in the 2020/21 winter semester. In navigating the pandemic, American Studies Leipzig (ASL) will strive to strike a balance between accommodating the additional difficulties introduced by public health measures (e.g. by extending individual deadlines, etc.) on the one hand and offering as much structure and guidance as possible on the other. This news item serves as the authoritative source on all curricular questions introduced by the pandemic.

Start of Instruction / Orientation Week

  • Instruction for all cohorts (i.e. all seminars, lectures, tutorials in American Studies modules) will begin on October 26. ASL is currently planning for a hybrid semester with some teaching happening online and some in person. We will update this news item with information on which modules will contain in-person teaching.

Updated: All instruction will take place in online formats. Please see the attached PDF for our reasons for this decision as well as for additional guidance.

Updated: Your instructors will contact you via email (to your studserv address) with more information ahead of the first session. Make sure to check your studserv email account regularly.

  • Starting dates for modules offered by other institutes (such as the Language & Societies modules or your Wahlbereich- and SQM modules) may differ. Please check with the operating institutes.
  • Incoming first-year students will have their program orientation on 13 October. We are currently planning for an in-person event (with the necessary distancing protocols in place), so please be ready to be in Leipzig on that date.

Access to the American Studies Leipzig Institute & Office Hours

  • The Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum GWZ has reopened as of 1 October. Visitors are required to wear a facemask throughout their entire visit. Exceptions are possible in individual rooms and will be announced there, if applicable.
  • For details on whether office hours will take place in person or remotely, please check the individual instructor’s info boxes at
