Culture and Education in German Foreign Policy

On the panel for creating world-wide networks for education and scholarship were the Secretary General of the Alexander-Humboldt Foundation, the Head of the Crespo Foundation, the Director of Worldwide Communications for Deutsche Post World Net, and American Studies. There were some fifty participants engaged with the panel in a two-hour exchange. Among other arguments, Crister Garrett stressed that more needs to be done to provide a positive image of east German universities world-wide, and that outstanding institutions for pursuing German cultural and educational policy internationally, such as the Herder Institute at the University of Leipzig, need more national support. Innovative programs such as American Studies Leipzig, moreover, are playing a strong role in internationalizing German higher education and raising the profile of regions like Leipzig especially in the areas of “Kultur und Bildung”.
