ASL Participates in Teacher Training Workshop

American Studies Leipzig participated in a teacher training workshop organized by the State of Thueringia and by the U.S. Consulate in Leipzig and held in Eisenach on 27 April. Just over fifty teachers of English and Social Studies heard a presentation by Crister Garrett on “Integrating Language Learning and Landeskunde: The Case of Teaching American Society and Environmental Politics”. The presentation involved showing teachers from Gymnasium and Mittleschulen how the internet can empower education through interactive learning and direct participation in environmental projects, many led by students themselves, that are underway in the United States. Teachers related how important environmental issues are for their students, and that teaching about the United States and the English language via classroom units on environmental issues and the internet would be very popular with students, and thus effective.
