ASL Student Orientation Week 2007

American Studies will hold during 1 – 8 October its third annual orientation week. The American Studies Orientation Week is meant to introduce new students to what is involved with pursuing a degree in American Studies, to the broader American Studies Community in Leipzig, and to help current students organize their studies for the coming semester (and beyond).

For the first time there will be separate orientation programs, depending on which American Studies program you are enrolled in. We highly encourage you to participate in the events and take this chance for individual advising and getting to know the institute’s staff and fellow students. Please scroll down or click above to find out more about the orientation for your respective program.

First-Year Bachelor Orientation

For the incoming students, the orientation is mandatory, and we really look forward to seeing you at the American Studies Orientation Week and getting to meet you for the first time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact members of our American Studies Student Advising Team.

The First-Year BA Orientation will take place on 2 and 4 October (3 Oct. being a national German holiday).

Starting Tuesday morning, 2 October, at 9 am, we will have an orientation registration and spend the morning presenting the program, providing students with a chance to get to know the staff and to ask questions. You will also get a chance to enroll in your Wahlbereich. In the afternoon, from 2 pm to 3 pm, we have a visit planned to the American Consulate where you can meet the Public Affairs Officer and learn about the various resources available to you for your studies at the Consulate. Afterwards there will be a champagne reception, followed by a scavenger-hunt (Schnitzeljagd) where you will be made up into teams and have to solve tasks around Leipzig. We did this last year (helps students get to know the university, the town, and each other a bit better), and the students loved it. We will even have prizes!

On Thursday, 4 October, we will have several staff members available for individual advising from 9 am to 11 am. In the afternoon, from 1 pm to 2 pm, there will be a special tour of the University Library for American Studies students. From 2 pm to 3 pm, we will offer you a session on study abroad and international internships opportunities. We will round up the day with an American Studies barbecue beginning at 4 pm on Thursday.

An overview of the BA orientation program can be found here.

First-Year Master Orientation

The MA Orientation will begin at 11 am on 4 October with an address of welcome where you will be introduced to our faculty and staff members and to the institute itself. During lunch you will get a chance to get to know each other. And afterwards, there will be a special campus tour for you to become acquainted with the university. In the afternoon, our new MA students will join the faculty and other American Studies students in the American Studies barbecue.

Second-Year Bachelor Orientation

For our second-year BA students, we want to take this opportunity and talk about your first year of studying in Leipzig, your future course of studies and choosing your core electives (Wahlpflicht) in American Studies. In the afternoon, from 1 pm to 2 pm, of 1 October there will be an orientation session where we will introduce you to some new developments and answer your questions, etc. Afterwards, we offer you individual advising.
