The Digital Summer Semester at American Studies Leipzig

In the upcoming summer semester 2021, all instruction at ASL will continue to be done remotely, mostly via Zoom and Moodle. We have not made this decision lightly. However, in light of the contingencies imposed by the pandemic, we feel that it is more important for faculty and students to be able to plan the upcoming months. Deciding to do one more fully digital semester, and making this decision now, will allow all of us to better prepare for the road ahead.

Suspension of Teaching between Dec. 17 and Jan. 10

Per the university leadership’s decision, all teaching—including digital formats—will be suspended between Dec. 17 and Jan. 10. From the feedback we have received, faculty at American Studies Leipzig understand that this decision makes dealing with the ongoing pandemic easier for some students but that it also presents an additional set of unfortunate challenges for many others.

ASL's Gesine Wegner Receives Publication Award for Excellence in Comic Studies

American Studies Leipzig is proud to announce that Gesine Wegner, doctoral fellow at ASL, is the recipient of the 2020 Martin-Schüwer Publication Award for Excellence in Comic Studies. The Martin-Schüwer Prize is presented annually by the Society for Comics Studies (ComFor) and the Committee for Comic Studies (AG Comicforschung) of the German Society of Media Studies (GfM).

Eleonora Ravizza Defends Her Doctoral Thesis

On Thursday, October 24, ASL instructor Eleonora Ravizza successfully defended her doctoral thesis in front of a dissertation committee and an audience of about 20 people. This process is part of receiving a doctorate degree at Leipzig University's Philological Faculty.

ASL's Stefan Schubert Discussed Environmental Storytelling at LNC

On May 11, 2019, the HTWK Leipzig hosted the 13th “Lange Nacht der Computerspiele” (LNC), displaying a variety of video and computer games in numerous booth and rooms and inviting guests to interact with these games. As part of the LNC, a newly founded initiative called lalalab, which aims to celebrate the cultural potentials of video games, was also inaugurated with a festival within the festival, the SpielKulturLabor.

ASL's Stefan Schubert Talks about Gender Roles in Westerns and Soap Operas

On April 16, ASL's Stefan Schubert talked to a crowd of about 50 people about gender and genre in film and television, in a presentation titled “Von Lonesome Cowboys und Desperate Housewives: Geschlechterdarstellungen im US-Fernsehen.” In his talk, Schubert discussed genres as mixtures between formal and cultural conventions and especially highlighted the cultural work that they do, tracing generic allegiances between the prototypical American genre of the Western and
