Former American Studies Leipzig faculty member Dr. Frank Usbeck has written a post for the SKD blog on the use of native American symbolism by far-right, pro-Trump rioters at the US capitol in January. During his time at ASL, Usbeck had worked extensively on the appropriation of native American culture in the formation of German nationalism during the 19th century, and on how this fed into Nazi ideology and anti-American propaganda in the early 20th century.

The ASL-based graduate journal aspeers just published its new calls for papers. The general section of the 14 (2021) issue aims to showcase, without topical restrictions, outstanding academic work done on the MA level of American studies at European universities. The topical section will feature academic submissions organized around the theme of “Narratives of American Colonization and Imperialism.”

ASL’s Stefan Schubert recently published his dissertation on Narrative Instability: Destabilizing Identities, Realities, and Textualities in Contemporary American Popular Culture.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Prof. Crister S. Garrett. We have lost a wonderful colleague, a dear friend, and an outstanding scholar. Prof. Garrett joined American Studies Leipzig in 2003, bringing a clear vision and a unique energy that transformed and shaped the institute in the years since. His passing presents an immeasurable loss to the institute, to the students, and to the larger community. We will miss him so much.

American Studies Leipzig is proud and happy to announce that Mascha Lange and Dr. Stefan Schubert have been granted one of Leipzig University's Pre-Doc Awards. The award will allow Mascha Lange to bridge the gap between the phase of having finished her academic degree and trying to secure long-term funding for a doctoral project. Thematically, this project, supervised by Prof. Katja Kanzler and Dr.

Sebastian Herrmann's office hours will have to be moved from Monday, Dec. 10, to Tuesday, Dec. 11, 5pm

American Studies Leipzig is delighted to announce that Prof. Katja Kanzler has assumed the position of Professor for American Literature at the institute. As previously indicated, Prof. Kanzler accepted Leipzig University’s offer to join ASL earlier this year, and she will start teaching classes in our BA and MA programs as the winter semester begins this week.

On Monday, June 25, 2018, ASL instructor Stefan Schubert successfully defended his doctoral thesis in front of a dissertation committee and an audience of about 30 people. This process is part of receiving a doctorate degree at Leipzig University's Philological Faculty.

Dr. Herrmann's office hours will have to be canceled today, June 25th.
