Picador Professor Paul La Farge Read from his Novel at the English Theatre in Berlin

Current holder of the Picador Guest Professorship for Literature, Paul La Farge, held a reading of his upcoming novel, The Night Ocean, at the English Theater in Berlin on January 9. The event was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy Berlin and the Holtzbrinck Veranstaltungsforum.

Moderated by the director of the Institute for American Studies at the University of Leipzig, Prof. Crister S. Garrett, the event saw up to 70 guests in attendance for what proved to be an exciting evening, filled with lively discussion. Paul La Farge discussed the process of writing fiction and weighed in on the relationship of the factual to fiction in the texts of legendary horror writer H. P. Lovecraft, the inspiration for Paul La Farge's The Night Ocean. As an answer to one of the many questions of the evening—if he sees himself as a realist writer of fiction—he said that he is “a type of realist.”
