The German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C. is calling for applications for their 2020 internship program. A three-month internship is preffered. Students interested in an internship in 2020 should apply by August 31, 2019. Otherwise, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Students of history, political science, public relations, and public administration at German and U.S. universities have an opportunity to gain experience at a scholarly research instutute at the GHI. As the GHI will try to accommodate accepted interns’ interests, abilities, and goals, the internship will be flexible.

Students of history and political science can apply for a research-oriented internship, in which they would assist with individual research projects and help with the GHI publications and digital projects, including research activities at the Library of Congress. They would take part in the institute’s public outreach activities and assist in the preparation and hosting of conferences. Students of public relations can apply for an internship with the communications and press team. They would assist in writing communication materials and be involved in the planning of public events. Ideally, all candidates should have prior experience in the respective fields.

  • Preference is given to applicants who have completed a BA degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Applicants who require a visa must be enrolled at a university at the time of their internship.

Interns receive a stipend (€300/month) from the GHI. The GHI also covers the cost of applying for the J-1 visa. Interns can also apply for an additional grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
