ASL Hosted Interdisciplinary Conference on Reality in Serial Formats

Two weeks ago, on Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25, ASL had the pleasure to host the most recent conference held by Weiter sehen, which was established in Dresden and now found its way to Leipzig through Prof. Katja Kanzler, who is one of the researchers in the network. The conference was titled “Weiter sehen: Realität in Serie.”

After an introduction by Prof. Katja Kanzler, the conference started with a talk on MTV Cribs and continued on with a wide range of topics, such as Donald Trump, True Crime shows, and TV Westerns. Owing to the interdisciplinarity of Weiter sehen, these talks featured an array of approaches, with presenters coming from sociology, theology, American studies, and educational science. This diversity of viewpoints led to multifaceted presentations and sparked interesting discussions, for which ample time was scheduled after each talk.

The conference not only attracted the scholars from the Weiter sehen network and beyond but also saw attendance by about 20 students over the two days and some members of the general public. In the breaks and at the end of each day, guests were invited to stay around for food, drinks, and conversation. For some impressions from the conference, please see the gallery below.
