Next Picador Professor Oksana Marafioti

American Studies Leipzig is proud to announce Oksana Marafioti as our next Picador Guest Professor for Literature. She will hold the professorship in the winter term of 2020/21.

A US-American writer of Armenian and Russian Romani descent, Oksana Marafioti is the author of American Gypsy: A Memoir, which was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 2012. Her writings have appeared in numerous outlets such as Rumpus, Slate, and Times. Next to being a writer, Professor Marafioti is a classically trained pianist and holds a BS in Cinematography and an MFA in Creative Writing from University of Nevada-Las Vegas where she also teaches. She was the 2013 Black Mountain Instiute-Library of Congress Kluge Fellow.

Professor Marafioti will be teaching two classes during her term as the Picador Professor for Literature, a seminar on the American short story as well as a workshop on creative writing.

The Picador Professorship for Literature at the University of Leipzig is unique in Germany. Located at the University’s American Studies Program, it is based on a partnership between the Veranstaltungsforum der Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, the DAAD, and the University of Leipzig.
