On January 20, American Studies Leipzig's Prof. Crister S. Garrett shared his assessment of the Government shutdown in an interview with Deutschlandfunk.

The discord about the budget, says Prof. Garrett, is not an ideological battle but a political gamble. Republicans adopt a hard line on immigration policy to secure key constituencies in traditionally Republican districts.

Republicans are well aware of the dangers. American voters have become increasingly impatient about partisan politics. The elections in November this year will show how successful their strategy was.

The shutdown itself will be resolved soon. Prof. Garrett believes that Congressional leaders will arrive at an agreement some time next week.
