New Book on the Poetics of Politics

During this winter, the research initiative on “Selbst-Bewusste Erzählungen” completed final touches on a larger project that started with a conference jointly organized by American Studies scholars in Leipzig and Dresden in June 2013: Titled Poetics of Politics: Textuality and Social Relevance in Contemporary American Literature and CultureBook Cover, the meeting engaged international scholars from the fields of literary theory, cultural studies, performance studies, (new) media studies, and cultural history to discuss the concurrence of a 'political turn' in American literature and cultural productions and a 'poetic turn' in politics in recent years.

The essay collection, jointly edited by the members of the research initiative including ASL's Sebastian M. Herrmann and Stefan Schubert, now features papers by many of the conference participants and some additional contributions to the topic. The volume's sixteen essays cover a wide range of text types and media such as film and television, non-fiction (including government documents), classic 'literature,' and new media. We gladly announce that this essay collection will be released in late April 2015.
