ASL Graduate Presents at FRIAS Conference

American Studies Leipzig graduate Claudia Müller recently participated in the conference “Arm nicht sexy: Repräsentationen von Armut in der amerikanischen Gegenwartskultur” at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). Taking place from July 21st to 23rd 2011, the conference was the first one within German American Studies exclusively focusing on the field of Poverty Studies.

In her presentation “ ‘Ugly black grease to be wipe away’: The Image of the ‘Fat Poor’ in Push and Precious,” Claudia Müller explained her concept of the fat poor and did an exemplary case study on the image of the fat poor in both the novel Push and its movie adaption Precious.

Claudia Müller currently works on her dissertation on the image of the fat poor and its logic in US-American popular discourse.
