Deutschlandradio Interviews ASL About GOP Candidates

Deutschlandradio’s D-Wissen program conducted a live interview with ASL for its morning show on October 10th about the Republican Party efforts to find a strong candidate to run against President Obama in the 2012 election. Reporter Steffi Ohrbach asked Crister Garrett why it seems so difficult for the GOP to find a clear favorite. Garrett noted that the Republican Party has different constituencies, and these are often in conflict with each other, for example, the Tea Party movement and more moderate factions.

Hessischer Rundfunk Speaks with ASL About Wall Street Protests

Hessischer Rundfunk (Hessian Public Radio) spoke with American Studies Leipzig on October 5, 2011 for its noon news program about the expanding protests against Wall Street involving street demonstration in front of the New York Stock Exchange and increasingly in other parts of the country. Reporter Doris Rank asked Crister Garrett if the Obama Administration was concerned about the protests. Garrett replied that they were certainly watching them, especially since diverse unions and progressive grass-roots groups were getting increasingly involved.

Follow the Study Tour 2011 Online

On September 20th, 19 students departed for the 2011 Study Tour to South Carolina and New Orleans. The tour is a cooperation of the institutes of American Studies and Ethnology in Leipzig and the institute of American Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. The tour was organized by Prof. Hartmut Keil and Dr. Elisabeth Thiele and will take the participants to Columbia and Charleston in South Carolina and New Orleans with the goal to take a closer look at the history and contemporary challenges of African Americans in the US South.
