ASL discussed Obama's Inauguration with Experts on US Politics

On January 22, 2013, one day after President Obama took his second oath of office, ASL saw a full house for its inauguration event. In a packed seminar room, Prof. Crister Garrett welcomed US Consul General Mark J. Powell and Prof. Paul S. Rundquist to speak about and discuss “Obama 2.0.” Mark J. Powell has served as a professional American diplomat in Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Professor Paul S. Rundquist worked for some thirty years at the Congressional Research Service in the Library of Congress.

ASL and GACC CA start internship cooperation

On January 15, 2013, ASL students took the opportunity to inform themselves about internship opportunities with the German American Chamber of Commerce California (GACC CA) in Leipzig. Prof. Crister Garrett welcomed GACC CA Executive Director Steve Riedel, who spoke about the different functions GACC CA has, for example the J1-visa service or helping businesses to coordinate transatlantic relations. It's about being part of the process: ASL hosts 5th BART Bash

On January 10, 2013, American Studies Leipzig hosted its fifth BART Research Bash, an informal event with snacks and soda in which two of the institute‘s scholars discuss both their present research interests and their scholarly biography. This time, Prof. Crister Garrett and Florian Bast, MA, shared insights into their scholarly work and talked about their ways into academia.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Mary Rogus on Media and the 2012 Election

On December 17, 2012, Professor Mary Rogus from Ohio University gave a talk at American Studies Leipzig on the role of media in the 2012 presidential election. Entitling her observations as “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” the renowned professor for broadcast journalism paid particular attention to the immense amount of money the candidates spent on campaign advertising previous to the election, how these sums were focused on key swing states, and how despite this, such sums had relatively little influence on the voters’ turnout or ballots cast.

American Studies Leipzig rated among the top research institutes for American Studies in Germany in the recently conducted rating by the German Wissenschaftsrat (WR).

ASL and Fulbright Celebrate 60 Years of German-American Exchange

On December 6, 2012, American Studies Leipzig, the Fulbright Commission in Berlin, and the US Consulate in Leipzig celebrated 60 years of German-American higher education exchange thanks to the Fulbright Program at an afternoon symposium. Entitled, “Diversity, Economic Change, and Employment: The Transatlantic Laboratory,” the symposium brought together some 75 Fulbright alumni, current fellows, students, staff, and professors from the United States and Germany.

Study Abroad Workshop: International Opportunities for Students

On October 25, 2012, about twenty ASL students took the opportunity to inform themselves about their possibilities to study abroad. Anja Eifert, coordinator for internationalization and study abroad at ASL, hosted the workshop and provided information on why, when, and how to study abroad. Ms.
