Americans and Friends of America alike are invited to an after work/school informal gathering on the last Thursday of every month. Meet people with similar backgrounds and experiences. Help others master the process of registering with the German authorities and
settling in or just come to chat about developments in Leipzig and Germany or the upcoming mid-term elections in the US. Come to hear another American accent!

Due to sickness, both guest lectures with Dr. Charlie Whitham on Wednesday, July 7, and on Thursday, July 8, are canceled.

The U.S. Consulate General Leipzig in cooperation with the Ring-Café present public viewing of the soccer world cup game Slovenia vs. USA on Friday, June 18 (with the Leipzig Lions cheerleaders). The game will start at 4 pm.

Thanks to a very generous grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Institute for American Studies at Universität Leipzig is able to offer two scholarships to select BA American Studies students to study at Ohio University during the 2010-2011 academic year. The scholarship will cover tuition, health insurance, air travel, and provide a sizable living stipend.

To apply, American Studies students must be in their second year of the BA American Studies program.

The German Academic Exchange Service has awarded the Institute for American Studies a multi-year grant with which to provide selected second-year BA American Studies students with a generous scholarship to study at Ohio University.

On the afternoon of May 7, American Studies Leipzig alumnus Kai Blum came back for a visit to his alma mater. During a professional round table at the American Studies Institute, the public relations consultant and author, who moved to the USA in 1994, read from his book “Fettnaepchenfuehrer USA.” Afterwards, Blum answered a wide range of student questions concerning living and working in the USA.

On March 22 and 23, American Studies Leipzig hosted its first annual graduate conference for MA-level students, entitled “Between Global Village and Global Dump: Placing America in a Transnational World.” During these two days, MA students from universities in England, Poland, Romania, Turkey, and Germany participated in a lively discussion on a variety of issues related to current globalization.

On Saturday, March 27, Leibniz Prof. John B. Boles will hold special office hours from 11 am to 3 pm.
