Fulbright Offering Scholarships for American Studies Institute 2016

From 17 September to 1 October 2016, the Fulbright commission will organize the American Studies Institute, an interdisciplinary research opportunity for German scholars, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers in the humanities with a clear connection to the US.

This year’s American Studies Institute will address “Why Black Lives Matter: Race and Politics in the U.S.” and will be organized in collaboration with the San Francisco State University. The Fulbright commission will provide 10 to 15 scholarships.

American Studies Leipzig is very happy to welcome Humboldt Fellow Dong Li as a visiting author for 2016. The poet and translator holds an M.F.A. in Literary Arts from Brown University and is currently a German Chancellor Fellow with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and a Literature Fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart).

MDR Figaro Interviews American Studies Leipzig About Donald Trump and Muslims

The leading cultural show for radio in central Germany, MDR Figaro, spoke with American Studies Leipzig Director Crister S. Garrett today about the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and his call to ban Muslims from entering America. Reporter Katja Schmidt asked if Trump is serious about this, and if Americans are swayed by his proposal and campaign. Professor Garrett replied that Trump is a classic populist if not demagogue and should be taken seriously; he is polling around 25% of Republican voters.
