Beyond the Beaches: A Survey of Contemporary and Classic Caribbean Literature (Seminar)

In this class, we will read writing by anglophone Caribbean writers with the goal of learning the history, culture and contemporary issues facing this diverse and vital part of the world. We will read poetry, fiction, and non-fiction, and in some cases, we will have the opportunity to interview authors writing in and about the Caribbean. Readings for this course will include, among other texts:

On Tuesday, November 04, 2014, more than fifty people attended a reading given by Picador Guest Professor Michael Lowenthal. The event, which took place at the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst (GfZK), was moderated by MDR Figaro journalist and author Ellen Schweda.

On Wednesday, June 04, 2014, Picador Guest Professor Guillermo Verdecchia gave a reading at the theater.FACT in Leipzig. About thirty to forty people attended the event, which was moderated by MDR Figaro journalist and author Ellen Schweda. Professor Verdecchia read passages from his play The Adventures of Ali & Ali and the aXes of Evil and his forthcoming work Galicia and Other Canadas.

Picador Professorship Extended for Another 4 Years!

ASL is proud to announce that the DAAD has approved its application for a 4-year extension of the Picador Professorship for Literature!

This means that, after 8 years of having a different English-speaking author teach classes at our institute each semester, we are now set for another 8 Picadors to enrich the institute's community with their presence and experiences, to add a vast array of different courses on literature and creative writing to our curriculum, and to contribute to the literary culture of the city of Leipzig.
