Picador Reading by James Hopkin

The Veranstaltungsforum der Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck and American Studies Leipzig jointly hosted the second Picador Professorship Reading in the Galerie Pierogi on Thursday, July 12. In the gallery packed with over 70 guests, Picador Professor and novelist James Hopkin read from his novel Winter under Water. He was joined by his guest, anglo-indian writer Priya Basil, who read from her novel Ishq and Mushq.

The University of Leipzig’s official news monthly, the Uni-Journal, covered the inauguration of the new Picador Professorship for Literature at the American Studies Institute in its April 2007 edition. As the author of the story underscored, “the Picador Chair is meant to further establish American Studies at Leipzig as one of the leading programs of its kind n Germany and to substantially encourage the further internationalisation of the university landscape in Saxony.”

Picador Professor James Hopkin Arrives In Leipzig

The next Picador Professor for Literature James Hopkin will arrive at American Studies Leipzig on Monday, April 9, 2007. The acclaimed British author will stay in Leipzig for the Summer Term of 2007 to teach two courses. A course on Thomas Pynchon will provide students with the perspective of a practicing writer on one of America's most notable authors. A Creative Writing / Book Reviewing class will give students an opportunity to work hands on with a practitioner of literature.

Professor Hopkin's classes will begin April 11.

ASL Holds First Picador Reading

American Studies Leipzig, the DAAD, and the Holtzbrinck Veranstaltungsforum hosted the first Picador reading at the Galerie Pierogi on Thursday night. Picador Professor Tristan Hughes read from two of his novels in the gallery, located in an old industrial complex in Leipzig Plagwitz. Some 50 people attended the reading.
