Katja Kanzler Holds her Inaugural Lecture
On January 17, 2019, ASL's Prof. Katja Kanzler held her inaugural lecture at Felix-Klein-Hörsaal in the Neues Paulinum. Speaking in front of an audience of about 50 students, faculty, and guests, she addressed the topic: "Von der Krisenhaftigkeit des Romans, 'Bookish Books' und der Politik des Literarischen in den USA des 21. Jahrhunderts." She was introduced and welcomed by Prof. Beat Siebenhaar, Dean of the Philologische Fakultät, as is tradition.
In her talk, Prof. Kanzler first established that the crisis or even death of the novel in the 21st century has been proclaimed many times. She then went on to explain how so-called 'bookish books,' that is, books that draw explicit attention to their own mediality, are a reflection of the novel's need for these crises to constantly reinvent itself. To illustrate this, she discussed Salvador Plascienca's novel The People of Paper and S by Doug Dourst and J.J. Abrams as two case studies.
After the lecture, most guests stayed for the reception, enjoying food, drinks, and conversation.
