Fulbright Lecture by Joseph Kunkel

ASL Book Club

In literature there is always more than meets the eye. A large, supporting, significant part of the iceberg unseen at the first glance. Therefore, the ASL Book Club‘s aim is to provide a space for students to meet, share thoughts, and discuss works significant to US culture, politics and society. Thereby it offers students a chance to expand their horizons and take a look beneath the surface of influential works.

Lecture on Toni Morrison by Prof. Koenen

On Thursday, 5. May, 7pm, Professor Koenen will give a public talk on Toni Morrison at the Frauenkultur e.V., Windscheidstrasse 51, 04277 Leipzig.

Toni Morrison ist bisher die einzige Afro-Amerikanerin, der der Nobelpreis für Literatur verliehen wurde. In ihren Werken stehen schwarze Frauen - die durch Geschlecht und Rasse benachteiligt sind - im Mittelpunkt, vor allem mit der Thematik: Wie lassen sich Mutterschaft und Freiheit miteinander verbinden? Diese Frage wird im historischen Kontext verständlich: Mutterschaft galt als probates Mittel, um Sklavinnen an der Flucht zu hindern.

Inaugural Session of the ASL Book Club

Guest Professor in LC II Lecture on May 10

Professor Jan Nordby Gretlund from the University of Southern Denmark, Odense, will give a talk on the contemporary African-American novel, and on the fiction by Percival Everett in particular:

"Mediating Skin Color: From Movies to Novels to Movies."

The class, which is part of Professor Pisarz-Ramirez' lecture Multicultural America and the Canon, will be held on Tuesday, 10 May 2011, 9 - 11 am in lecture hall 4.


Fulbright Lecture by Shane McMillan

This week's Fulbright Lecture by Caitlan Carroll had to be cancelled due to illness.

Fulbright Professor Shane McMillan (University of Montana/Associated Press Berlin) will fill in for her, talking about "From a Montana Ranch to the Streets of Neukölln: A Transcultural Journey" on May 5, 2011, 5-7 pm at NSG Room 402.
