ASL's Stefan Schubert Discussed Environmental Storytelling at LNC

On May 11, 2019, the HTWK Leipzig hosted the 13th "Lange Nacht der Computerspiele" (LNC), displaying a variety of video and computer games in numerous booth and rooms and inviting guests to interact with these games. As part of the LNC, a newly founded initiative called lalalab, which aims to celebrate the cultural potentials of video games, was also inaugurated with a festival within the festival, the SpielKulturLabor.

ASL's Stefan Schubert Talks about Gender Roles in Westerns and Soap Operas

On April 16, ASL's Stefan Schubert talked to a crowd of about 50 people about gender and genre in film and television, in a presentation titled "Von Lonesome Cowboys und Desperate Housewives: Geschlechterdarstellungen im US-Fernsehen." In his talk, Schubert discussed genres as mixtures between formal and cultural conventions and especially highlighted the cultural work that they do, tracing generic allegiances between the prototypical American genre of the Western and contemp

The Simon Dubnow Institute and American Studies Leipzig cooperate to organize a lecture and workshop on Jewish American Literature with Julian A. Levinson of the University of Michigan.

Julian A. Levinson holds the Samuel Shetzer Chair in American Jewish Studies at the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies and Department of English Language and Literature, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

ASL Participates in Teacher Training Workshop

American Studies Leipzig participated in a teacher training workshop organized by the State of Thueringia and by the U.S. Consulate in Leipzig and held in Eisenach on 27 April. Just over fifty teachers of English and Social Studies heard a presentation by Crister Garrett on “Integrating Language Learning and Landeskunde: The Case of Teaching American Society and Environmental Politics”.

U.S. Consulate and ASL Cooperate on Teacher Training.

The United States Consulate in Leipzig and American Studies Leipzig cooperated on 17 April to offer a teacher training seminar looking at "Aspects of Contemporary American Society". Some twenty teachers from throughout the region (Mitteldeutschland) participated in the professional training seminar. Faculty member Crister Garrett offered a two-hour session on "Teaching American Politics: The Case of the Presidential Election 2008". A special focus of the session was how to integrate the internet into classroom teaching to allow students to "learn by doing".
