 Service Learning

Service Learning is recognized internationally as a highly valuable learning format for educating citizens for today’s increasingly complex and diverse societies with a growing range of needs among its members. Employers in a wide range of sectors especially welcome possible employees who have completed a service learning project since it underscores a candidate’s skills in engaging complex societal issues needing integrated knowledge and advanced service skills. Service Learning makes moreover a perfect fit with the American Studies Leipzig effort to integrate throughout its curriculum the virtues of Humboldt and Dewey philosophies for higher education.

Projects and Professions

Throughout the past decades the working world has changed fundamentally. Employers in Germany, the United States, and elsewhere are not only looking for applicants with good grades in their formal education. They are also looking for prospective employees that bring extra-curricular commitments and a variety of social skills with them.

With Service Learning ASL offers another opportunity for students to work on their professional development. Students participating in Service Learning will not just enhance essential soft and professional skills such as empathy, communication, project management, and networking but also get a glimpse into possible future fields of work.

This page is dedicated to the different projects that take place within the framework of Service Learning at ASL and will be updated once the projects have started.
