If you're thinking about starting a BA in American Studies this Fall, most importantly, please mind the application deadlines issued by the University. For most BA applicants, the application has to be in by 15 July. Also, if you are still unsure about your decision, be sure to check as many different sources of information as possible to get a balanced and comprehensive picture. Below, you will find a brief overview over some of these sources, together with some context:

  • Talk to current American Studies students on StudiVZ.
Search for "Amerikanistik Leipzig" to find local students. They will probably give you the most precise impression of what it is like to study American Studies in Leipzig. You might already have StudiVZ access, or you can sign up easily and get in touch with students right away.
  • Look at Rankings and Program Overviews, such as the CHE/Zeit Hochschulranking.
When you look at rankings, make sure that you know exactly what data they are comparing. For example, the CHE/Zeit ranked the American Studies Leipzig Program based on data from 2006 and the old Magisterstudiengang. Up-to-date information from the CHE/Zeit will not be available until next year, at best.
  • Look for the American Studies Group on facebook and talk to students there.
At the time of writing, there is one (rather small) American Studies Leipzig Group on facebook. You can use it to ask questions there or contact current students at the institute.
  • Take a Look at Wikipedia.
American Studies Leipzig is one of the few German American Studies Institutions with an entry in the Wikipedia.
  • Talk to the Student Council (Fachschaftsrat).
Again, another good resource to get in touch and hear from actual students what they are thinking about their study experience in Leipzig.
  • Check out this homepage.
Our sections on Student Life and Living in Leipzig will also help you get an impression of the city and the institute. In addition, you might find our overview for prospective students helpful.

If your research and conversations prompt new questions, we also encourage you to contact any of the American Studies Leipzig advisers with any question you still have. Just send us an email, we'll be happy to talk to you.
