American Studies Majors

BA- and MA-students need to register for their Modules via HIS-LS.

First-year students - both BA and MA - register during the course of their orientations.

Second-year BA students are invited to attend the orientation event on 1 October 2007 to get guidance for organizing the upcoming phase of their studies: Upon entering the program's second year, they may now choose among a set of Intermediary Modules. Students are welcome to browse the BA-documents available here to get a first sense of the credits you need to earn in the course of the program's second year.

In the upcoming semester, second-year BA majors may attend either or both Society, History & Politics II and / or Language & Society. Next to your American Studies coursework, you may attend a module for your Wahlbereich and a Professional Skills Module (SQM) out of the university's SQM-offerings. As in previous semesters, you are asked to browse the university's course listings (see also the Wahlbereich-Brochure below) and select up to four modules in each category for which you want to apply. Please print this application form, fill it out, and hand it in at the American Studies Secretariat (GWZ 3.506) from 26 September to 2 October 2007, during its regular office hours.

American Studies Wahlbereich

If you are interested in taking American Studies as your minor (Wahlbereich), we encourage you to look at the PDF document Options for Building a Minor in American Studies and to contact our Student Advising Team with any questions you may have.

For the following semester, Literature & Culture I, Society, History & Politics II, and Language & Society are open for students who take American Studies for their Wahlbereich. Those students need to apply for admission to these modules at the Institute where they are matriculated. Please note that all our modules require English language skills at level B2 European Framework (i.e., at least 8 years of language training); SHP II and L&S further require completion of related introductory modules. If you are uncertain whether you meet the requirements of the module you would like to attend, please ask the module's coordinator.

We will publish a list of Wahlbereich students accepted into the modules at noon on Friday, 5 October 2007, on our website and on the pinboard in front of room 3.502. To confirm your registration, you will need to come to the Institute’s secretariat (room 3.506) to sign the required forms on

  • Friday, 5 October 2007, 1 pm – 3:30 pm
  • Monday, 8 October 2007, 9 am-12 noon & 1 pm-3:30 pm, or
  • Tuesday, 9 October 2007, 9 am-12 noon & 1 pm-3:30 pm.

Please bring your student id (temporary id is also accepted) as well as documentation of your English language skills and / or of completion of required modules.

A final round of late admissions will be conducted on 10 October 2007.

Thank You.
