Kritische AmerikanistInnen Theory Reading Group First Meeting

Submitted by Eric Fraunholz on Tue, 04/26/2016 - 10:23
Date:
02. May 19:00 - 21:00

Kritische AmerikanistInnen is a reading group that seeks to stimulate a discussion within the framework of cultural studies by focusing on texts outside of the theoretical corpus, i.e., Critical Theory. By opening the debate to further perspectives, we hope to expand our understanding of society and culture, and promote a more critical engagement with conventional ideas of, e.g., culture, society, race, class, or theory.

We invite anyone interested from B.A./M.A. students to doctoral candidates to join us.

In the first meeting we will initiate our debate with David White and Bernard Rosenberg’s exchange about mass culture in the U.S.

Rosenberg, Bernard. “Mass Culture in America.” In Mass Culture the Popular Arts in America, edited by Rosenberg and David Manning White, 3-12. Glencoe: Free Press, 1963.

White, David M. “Mass Culture in America: A Different Point of View.” In Mass Culture the Popular Arts in America, 13-25.

More information and copies of the text can be found at the reading group's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/KritischeAmerikanistinnen/

We will meet 2 May 2016, 7 pm at Beyerhaus.
