Deutschlandfunk's morning reporter Christiane Kaess spoke with American Studies' Crister S. Garrett about the meaning of the Iowa caucuses for the remaining primaries, and as a barometer of the political mood in th United States currently. Professor Garrett observed that we have not witnessed such voter frustration and even anger in the last quarter century. The combination of voter fatigue toward "the establishment", the continuing impact of the Great Recession, and recent incidents of terror in the country all have grassroots voters looking for strong, fresh, different messages, and personalities offering those messages. Whether Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democrats or Donald Trump for the Republicans, we see the power of populist messages, especially in the midwest of the country, where populism has a long and influential history.
