ASL instructor and doctoral candidate Eric Fraunholz has been selected as a 2016 Fulbright American Studies Institute fellow. Endowed with a full scholarship, he will participate in this year's two-week seminar titled “Why Black Lives Matter: Race and Politics in the U.S.” The summer school will be held at San Francisco State University. Asked about his thoughts on this opportunity, Mr. Fraunholz stated:

I am very honored and grateful to receive this Fulbright scholarship. The Fulbright American Studies Institute on race and politics will help me immensely with my doctoral research on the contemporary transatlantic left. I am also looking forward to sharing and discussing the new perspectives and insights I will gain there not just with my colleagues but also with my students in the upcoming semesters.

Following Dr. Frank Usbeck, Dr. Sebastian M. Herrmann, and Dr. Anja Eifert, Eric Fraunholz will be the fourth ASL representative at the biennial Fulbright American Studies Institute over the past decade. Dr. Herrmann pointed out the importance of the Fulbright ASI for his development:

For me personally, biographically, the Fulbright Summer Institute marked the transition from being an MA student to beginning doctoral work for real; entering, as it were, into a community of doctoral and postdoctoral scholars. I am still grateful for the experience.

Dr. Eifert emphasized the program's strengths in bringing together academics from various disciplinary backgrounds with different approaches to American studies:

The Fulbright American Studies Institute enabled me to interact with renowned US scholars from a variety of fields and gave me a valuable insight into the truly international and interdisciplinary nature of American Studies, which was very formative at the early stages of my dissertation.

ASL is proud that Eric Fraunholz will continue this tradition and wishes him an exciting and rewarding experience.
