Thanks to a very generous grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Institute for American Studies at Universität Leipzig is able to offer two scholarships to select BA American Studies students to study at Ohio University during the 2010-2011 academic year. The scholarship will cover tuition, health insurance, air travel, and provide a sizable living stipend.

To apply, American Studies students must be in their second year of the BA American Studies program.

The scholarship allows students to pursue a BA American Studies with Transatlantic Capstone Program and Project Year. Students will be enrolled for two terms at Ohio University and take courses in International Studies while also pursuing an international project at the University’s award-winning Global Leadership Center. An internship will also be integrated into the program at Ohio University. Students return to Universität Leipzig to complete their BA studies and to write their BA thesis.

Students will have recorded in their Diploma Supplement that they have completed the BA American Studies with Transatlantic Capstone Program and Project Year. In addition they will receive a formal document from Ohio University and Universität Leipzig recognizing their achievement in the Transatlantic Program. Recipients of the DAAD Scholarship will be designated as American Studies Leipzig-Global Leadership Center Fellows.

To apply for the DAAD BA American Studies Transatlantic Capstone Program and Project Year Scholarship, students must submit (a) a transcript of grades (b) a cv (American-style, i.e., without photo and birth date), and (c) a statement-of-purpose.

The statement-of-purpose can be up to 1,000 words. It should address: (a) how the DAAD Ohio-Leipzig Transatlantic Program can empower your plans for a professional career/path (b) what is it about the GLC and its vision for education that can help you pursue your career goals, and (c) what do you find as advantageous about Ohio University, and its program in International Studies, for your studies and professional development and goals. What courses could you see taking from their offerings?

The application and statement-of-purpose should be addressed to: 2010 Selection Committee, BA American Studies with Transatlantic Capstone Program and Project Year.

Applications are due by Friday, 18 June, at 5 PM, in the mailbox of Professor Crister Garrett. Selected students will be notified at the beginning of the following week if they will be invited to an interview, the final stage of the nomination process for a scholarship.

For inquiries, please contact Professor Crister Garrett at crister.garrett@uni-leipzig.de or at 973-7335.
