Last week, American Studies Leipzig welcomed about 40 guests at Skala Leipzig who all came to listen to Picador Professor Shannon Cain. During her reading on May 26, she introduced her current project Tuscon the Novel: An Experiment in Literature and Civil Discourse, a political novel Cain publishes in the tradition of serialization. For this, Cain gets up in front of the Tuscon city council to read three-minute installments oft he story every week.

When asked about her role as a writer in relation to current events by MDR journalist Julia Kastein, Cain expressed that she has an obligation to show the world to others without telling them what to think. In addtion to talking about her life as an author, she elaborated on her life as a creative writing teacher and how it influenced her own writing. "You become aware of the fundamentals that appear on the page more," Cain expressed.

Shannon Cain is a multiple award-winning fiction author. Her debut short story collection will be published this fall by the University of Pittsburgh Press as the winner of the 2011 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Currently she teaches two seminars as part of her Picador Professorship at ASL.
