On Monday, 31 March, Bethany Lerch hosted an early evening event that explored American culture through the lens of reality TV.

It began with a historical background of reality television in the United States and previewed various well-known shows. The two-hour conversation and language activity culminated in an engaging debate. Participants discussed the meaningfulness, or lack of meaning, in reality television, its benefits as well as its negative consequences. Ultimately, the question worth thinking about is how much it influences American life, and—vice versa—how well it reflects American life.

Ms. Lerch's course not only taught participants the peculiarities of reality TV and how it is to be read apropos American culture, but it was also a great opportunity for non-native speakers of the English language to engage with the characteristic vocabulary of the media branch.
