American Studies Leipzig is honored to welcome Shannon Cain, holder of the Picador Guest Professorship for Literature in the summer term of 2011.

Shannon Cain is a multiple award-winning fiction author. Her debut short story collection will be published this fall by the University of Pittsburgh Press as the winner of the 2011 Drue Heinz Literature Prize. Her stories have been awarded the Pushcart Prize, the O. Henry Prize and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. They have appeared or are forthcoming in Tin House, The Colorado Review, the New England Review, American Short Fiction and Southwords: New Writing From Ireland.

Shannon earned her MFA in 2005 from the Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. She is the co-editor, with Lisa Bowden, of Powder: Writing by Women in the Ranks, from Vietnam to Iraq (Kore Press, 2008) and co-adapter of Coming In Hot, the stage adaptation of the book. In 2008, she was a member of the National Endowment for the Arts’ funding panel on literary magazines and small presses. Shannon has taught fiction writing at the University of Arizona, Gotham Writers’ Workshop, UCLA Extension, Arizona State University and as a private coach and workshop facilitator. She is founder of the postgraduate writer’s social network and online learning community However; Artist-in-Residence for the City of Tucson’s Ward One; and the fiction editor for Kore Press. Shannon lives in downtown Tucson with her teenage daughter. Her current creative project is Tucson, the Novel: An Experiment in Literature and Civil Discourse.

Shannon Cain will stay in Leipzig from the end of April 2011 to the end of July 2011 to teach two courses at Leipzig's American Studies Institute, to contribute to the city's cultural life, and to work on her next projects.

Courses by Shannon Cain

During the Summer Term, Shannon Cain will teach two courses in the American Studies Institute. A literary studies course called "Reading Like a Writer: The Close Reading of Contemporary American Short Stories Through the Lens of the Writer of Literary Fiction" and a course on "Creative Writing and Literary Publishing," which will result in the publication of a LitMag by the students. 

Meet Shannon Cain

The Picador Professorship for Literature at the University of Leipzig is unique in Germany. Located at the University's American Studies Program, it is based on a partnership between the Veranstaltungsforum der Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, the DAAD, and the University of Leipzig.

American Studies Leipzig is very much interested in organizing Picador Professorship Events (readings, round tables, panel discussions, etc.) with local, regional and national partners.
