Frank Usbeck Publishes Monograph on Native American Imagery in Nazi Germany

Frank Usbeck, who graduated and earned his PhD from American Studies Leipzig, recently published his dissertation Fellow Tribesmen. The Image of Native Americans, National Identity, and Nazi Ideology in Germany. Awarded with the Rolf Kentner Dissertation Prize of the Heidelberg Center for American Studies in 2011, the dissertation was published with Berghahn Books in New York in June.

American Studies Leipzig Scholar Presents at International Conference in Plymouth, MA

On 4-6 November 2011, Dr. Frank Usbeck participated in the annual conference of the New England American Studies Association. This year's NEASA meeting was titled "American Mythologies." Dr. Usbeck's presentation, "Fellow Peoples, Common Enemies. The Myth of the German-Indian Brotherhood in Nazi Ideology and Anti-American Propaganda," discussed major tropes of Indian imagery in Germany of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Radio Blau Interviews ASL about Lebowski Roundtable

On Thursday, 28 April, local independent radio station Radio Blau interviewed ASL's Frank Usbeck about the upcoming roundtable and film screening on the Coen brothers' movie The Big Lebowski. During the interview, Usbeck discussed the essay collection The Year's Work in Lebowski Studies, edited by Aaron Jaffe and Edward Comentale, and its German translation Absolulte(ly) Big Lebowski, as representatives of an academic approach to the film and its fans, but also as part of the fan culture itself.
