ASL Welcomes Prof. Barry Laga as Fulbright Guest Professor

American Studies Leipzig is very happy to welcome Prof. Barry Laga as Fulbright Guest Professor for the coming two semesters. Prof. Laga earned his BA and MA at  Brigham Young University in Utah and his PhD from Purdue University in Indiana. Since 1997, he has been teaching at Colorado Mesa University in Colorado where he is Chair of the Department of Literature, Languages, and Mass Communication.

MDR Info Interviews ASL About Political Crisis in Washington DC

MDR Info, the main news radio station for the Mitteldeutschland region, conducted a live interview with American Studies Leipzig on Saturday, October 12, about the ongoing political crisis in Washington DC involving the federal government being closed and the country rapidly heading to defaulting on paying its debts.


New Seminar as Alternative in Module Transatlantic Space

For the module Transatlantic Space, there is now a new seminar that can be taken as an equivalency to the seminar being offered by Professors Garrett and Laga. The alternative seminar is being offered by Professor Keil and other colleagues from the Universität Leipzig. The seminar is entitled "Culture and Language: The Tradition of Transatlantic Migration and Slavery". Details are included in the attached announcement.


Follow the 2013 Study Tour to Houston Online!

On Thursday, a group of ASL students and Prof. Hartmut Keil will travel to Houston for a study tour titled "Immigration, Religion, and Citizenship." They will share their experiences on a blog under http://studytourhouston2013.wordpress.com/. The ASL students are joined by 4 students from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.


McCloy and ERP Scholarship Programs Calling for Applications

Dear students,

If you are thinking about studying in the US after finishing your BA, please have a look at the attached flyers of the McCloy and the ERP scholarship programs. McCloy specifically supports students at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, while ERP offers support for studies at other US universities. Both programs are open to excellent students with at least a BA degree from all academic disciplines. Application deadlines are October 15, 2013, for the ERP and November 1, 2013, for the McCloy program.

ASL Summer Lecture Series Closed with Talk by Billy Stratton

On July 11, 2013, Professor Billy Stratton from the University of Denver concluded the ASL Summer Lecture Series with his talk, "The Elegance of Peoplehood: Towards a Heteroholistic Conception of Native American Literature." After briefly introducing different approaches to Native American studies, Prof. Stratton explained his own approach to Native American literature through the concept of the Peoplehood matrix.


"I am trying to write the history of a feeling" - Grace Elizabeth Hale's Talk at ASL

On July 3, 2013, Prof. Grace Elizabeth Hale, Director of American Studies at the University of Virginia, held a talk entitled ,"Child's Play: Making an Alternative Culture in Athens, GA, in the Reagan Era" at American Studies Leipzig. In her lecture, Prof. Hale presented the research she has been conducting for her current book project on the emergence of the alternative culture scene in Athens, GA, in the 1980s.
