 Media Relations Internship with the International Rescue Committee, New York

A global leader in humanitarian assistance, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) offers help to people impacted by violent conflict and disaster. IRC teams provide health care, shelter, clean water, sanitation, learning programs for children and special aid for women. As emergencies subside, the IRC stays to help shattered communities recover and rebuild. The IRC is committed to restoring hope, dignity and opportunity.

The Media Relations Intern will join a team that focuses on raising the visibility of the IRC's programs. S/he will support several ongoing or expanding outreach campaigns, as well as providing assistance on other projects. The internship will provide the opportunity to hone media relations and writing skills.

Tasks:

  • Help generate media coverage for the IRC's humanitarian aid work
  • Support social media outreach on the IRC's press team Twitter account
  • Research target outlets and markets for IRC stories & campaigns
  • Provide general media outreach support during emergencies
  • Lead development of weekly communications update
  • Etc.

Requirements:

  • Student or recent graduate in journalism, international relations or public relations
  • Previous experience with media, public relations, or freelance writing
  • Demonstrated ability to write creative and compelling stories and other content
  • Keen interest in and knowledge of mainstream media, social media and bloggers
  • Familiarity with international/humanitarian issues
  • Excellent oral communications skills
  • Innovative networking techniques
